NFA & ATF Fingerprinting in Houston — Plus What You Need to Know About EFT Files

What Is NFA Fingerprinting?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates a specific class of firearms and accessories, including:

  • Suppressors (silencers)
  • Short-barreled rifles (SBR)
  • Short-barreled shotguns (SBS)
  • Machine guns
  • Destructive devices
  • Any Other Weapons (AOW)

When you apply to purchase or register any of these items — whether through ATF Form 1, Form 4, or Form 5 — you are required to submit fingerprints as part of your background check. This is what’s commonly called NFA fingerprinting.

These fingerprints go directly to the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) for identity verification. The ATF uses them to run your background check before approving your NFA application.

ATF Form 4 vs. Form 1: Which One Do You Need?

This is one of the most common questions we get, so let’s clear it up fast.

  • ATF Form 4 — Used when you are purchasing an NFA item from a dealer or another individual. This is the most common scenario (buying a suppressor from a gun shop, for example).
  • ATF Form 1 — Used when you are manufacturing your own NFA item, such as converting a pistol to an SBR.
  • ATF Form 5 — Used for tax-exempt transfers, typically for law enforcement.

Both Form 1 and Form 4 require fingerprints when submitted as a paper application. If you’re filing electronically through the ATF’s eForms portal, the requirement changes — and that’s where EFT files come in (more on that below).

Two Ways to Submit NFA Fingerprints

1. Ink Fingerprint Cards (Paper Application)

If you’re filing a paper Form 1 or Form 4, the ATF requires you to submit two completed fingerprint cards — specifically the standard FD-258 card or an ATF-specific NFA card.

These cards must be rolled accurately to be accepted. A smudged or incomplete card means a rejected application and a frustrating delay.

At go-Biometrics, we capture your fingerprints electronically using our LiveScan device and then print them onto your NFA fingerprint cards. This gives you the clean, consistent quality of digital capture with the physical card format the ATF requires. No ink mess. No smearing. No rejected prints.

What’s included:

  • Two complete sets of fingerprints on NFA/FD-258 cards
  • Accurate, clear impressions that meet ATF standards
  • We supply the cards — no need to track them down yourself

2. EFT Files (Electronic Application — ATF eForms)

If you’re filing your NFA application electronically through the ATF eForms portal, you don’t submit paper cards. Instead, you upload an Electronic Fingerprint Transmission (EFT) file — a digitally encrypted file that contains your fingerprints and biographical information.

This is the faster, cleaner route for many NFA applicants, and it’s where go-Biometrics stands out.

What Is an EFT File and How Does It Work?

An EFT (Electronic Fingerprint Transmission) file is a standardized digital file that contains:

  • Your rolled fingerprint images (captured electronically)
  • Your biographical information (name, DOB, address, etc.)
  • Encrypted formatting that meets ATF eForms upload requirements

When you file your Form 1 or Form 4 through the ATF’s eFile portal, you’ll be prompted to upload this file as part of your application. The ATF uses it to run your identity and background check electronically — no paper cards needed.

Who Needs NFA / ATF Fingerprinting?

You need NFA fingerprinting if you are:

  • Buying a suppressor — Form 4 requires fingerprints for individual purchasers
  • Registering an SBR or SBS — Form 1 or Form 4 depending on your situation
  • Purchasing any NFA-regulated item as an individual — Trust and LLC purchases have different requirements; consult your FFL/SOT dealer
  • A gun shop or FFL dealer requiring on-site fingerprinting for customers
  • Any individual applying through ATF eForms who needs an EFT file created

How to Prepare for Your NFA Fingerprinting Appointment

Before your appointment, make sure you have:

  • ✅ A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
  • ✅ Your ATF form number (Form 1 or Form 4 — know which one you’re filing)
  • ✅ Your filing method (paper cards or ATF eFile/EFT)
  • ✅ Biographical information ready (full legal name, date of birth, address)

If you’re unsure which form applies to your situation, your FFL dealer or SOT can advise you. Our job is to capture your prints accurately — you just need to show up (or let us come to you).

Frequently Asked Questions About NFA Fingerprinting in Houston

Do I need fingerprints if I’m buying through an NFA trust? Generally, no — individual trustees are not required to submit fingerprints for trust purchases. However, Responsible Persons (RPs) on a trust may be required to submit fingerprints and passport photos with ATF Form 23. Check with your FFL or attorney for guidance specific to your trust structure.

How many fingerprint cards do I need? For paper applications, the ATF typically requires two complete sets of fingerprints on separate cards. Our standard appointment includes two cards.

Can I use my NFA fingerprint cards for other purposes? NFA fingerprint cards are specifically formatted for ATF submissions. For other purposes (employment, licensing, FBI background checks), you’ll need FD-258 cards. We offer both.

What’s the difference between LiveScan printing and ink rolling? LiveScan captures your fingerprints digitally and prints them onto a card — producing cleaner, more consistent results. Traditional ink rolling is done manually. Both are accepted by the ATF; we use LiveScan for superior quality.

How long does the fingerprinting appointment take? Most NFA fingerprinting appointments take 15–30 minutes. We come to you, so there’s no travel time on your end.

Do you serve areas outside of Pearland? Yes — we serve all of Houston, Sugar Land, Manvel, Rosharon, and surrounding areas. A travel fee applies for locations outside a 15-mile radius. We will travel up to one hour away.

Can I get my EFT file and paper cards in the same appointment? Yes. If you need both (some applicants do for different items), we can handle it all in one visit.
